Beginning the Journey

 For our first two days, we traveled from Bahama, NC to Cookeville, TN, and spent two nights and days with our niece Sarah Seitzinger, with a visit also with her parents, my sister Adele Wagner Seitzinger and her husband Brad, who drove up from Spencer, TN.

On Friday, 9 April 2021, we began the real journey by driving from Cookeville to Pontiac, IL, the small town that we are using as our jumping off point. As the song says, Route 66 "... runs from Chicago to LA ... " but we did not want to start in Chicago. (Been there, done that, don't choose to do it again!) We arrived in Pontiac at about 6 PM Central time, so it took us about nine hours to get to Pontiac. It is really a pretty little place, fully embracing Route 66, with murals, decorations, and a retro look.

I did start the entry while still "on the road," but ran into too many difficulties with transferring photos and Internet connections that I gave up until we returned to good connections and I could add a screen to view photos. Although we were not limiting ourselves to the five major National Parks in Utah, we were interested in The Mighty Five, as they are called. (They are Arches, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Zion.) We started out this Tuesday by heading to Capitol Reefs. Changing Direction on the Fly -- Arches and Canyonlands

Friday, June 4 for Wednesday, May 19, 2021 It is understood that I have fallen behind in posting, and we are so close to the end. All the procedures I had been following to move pictures around so they could be imported began failing me near the end. so some, what I consider good, pictures will not appear, but I hope there are still some good ones. We started the day after breakfast and departing the hotel to Arches National Park. Let me say here, I wanted Arches to be my favorite of the Parks we visited, because I had seen so many wonderful pictures around that Park. We were really only a few miles away, and we got there 10:30-ish, and the Park was already full, and the line went out to the road. We switched gears and decided to visit Canyonlands National Park, which we presumed would be smaller, and we might try Arches later in the day. Snakes Alive, It's the Grand Canyon

 Sunday, May 2 for Friday, April 30, 2021 We checked out of the Grand Canyon Railroad Hotel where we spent Thursday night, had a very nice breakfast included with the hotel, and set out for the Grand Canyon, about 65 minutes, more or less, from Williams, AZ. When we got to the park, there was already a lineup of cars waiting to get in -- I think there were five lanes of cars, and we waited a while. As I have mentioned before, we have the "lifetime" senior pass, so we scoot right on through the gate when it is our turn. Randy's thought was to start out with the Desert View first, because there is a tower out there, and she figured there would be a lot of competition to see it as the day wore on. It was about 23 miles from the gate to the far eastern part of the park, our destination. It is considered to be the South Rim.
