A Day on and Around Historic Route 66

One of the events in history that established the importance of St. Louis was that the Lewis and Clark Expedition of Discovery began here in 1804 and ended with their return in 1806. We celebrated by going through the museum at the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center. It was a small but very thorough museum. Among the educational items was a very well-presented video. If you are not familiar with Lewis and Clark and the expedition, I recommend videos by PBS (Ken Burns) or many others that are available through streaming or likely on You Tube. They were another example of extraordinary men who were in the right place at the right time to do extraordinary things. The USA would not be like it is without them.

One of the fascinating parts of the Expedition was the part played by the young Native American, Sacajawea. While she was barely into her part of the Expedition, she gave birth to a boy, and after resting with the party, they took off with her carrying her two-month-old! He was a popular member of the group. His story is worth exploring. He was called "Pomp."

After our time in the museum speaking with the person attending to it, and one of their re-enactors, we headed out to a restaurant on Missouri portion of historic Route 66, called Big Chief Roadhouse. Excellent food, with some old pictures on the walls around the dining area. "Back in the day" this was a huge Inn as well as restaurant.

Randy was fascinated by a picture of a "reunion" of the survivors of the Battle of Little Bighorn -- remember, the Indians won that fight. The picture was from 1948, and the battle took place in 1876!

Randy and Herm were able to figure out where the Grant property we missed yesterday was located. We got there late, so we rushed through it, but it was an interesting place, again with an informative video, and worth coming back to see at a later date.

We had one more stop as we traveled along another section of Historic Route 66. We had been told we had to visit

That was our day! Next we are back on the road to see more sights.
