Don and Randy Wagner will set out on an adventure to travel most of what can be driven on U. S. Route 66 or the alternate Interstate and other roads which are near it. This first entry is to establish that this site will work! Please tune in for more for as many days as we can manage to make entries!

Monday, 12 April 2021 Sunday evening, we ended up with our hosts for a few days, Herm and Willo Shields, in Florissant, MO, near St. Louis. We have known Herm and Willo since 1976 in Columbus, OH, and have maintained our long-distance friendship all these years. We spent a lot of time catching up with family and personal news. On Monday morning, we set out for a Ulysses S. Grant family farm, but we had the address incorrect, and ended up in the wrong end of town. However, one of those different experiences happened as we drove through O'Fallon Park, a St. Louis city park. All those white things in the trees are egrets! The dark spots near them are nests, so they were not just roosting, they were there for the long haul. If you are not familiar with them, egrets are a white-feathered variety of heron, and look just like a great blue heron in a different color. The End of the Quest -- And Beginning the Next Quest

Sunday, May 9 for Saturday, May 8, 2021 Cutting to the chase, which I don't do very well (!), we made it to the western end of Route 66. We did NOT drive that last little bit ourselves, but we were passengers of Paul Griffith, and Randy's cousin Janie. Paul put up with all the traffic, ins and outs, crazy LA drivers, and finding suitable parking so we could show that yes, we did make it. In Randy's original itinerary, we would have finished up on May 7. After a full month of travel across a good portion of the country, we were one day late. Part of that was by choice, so we could run around with Janie and Paul and see sights that had nothing to do with Route 66. We started out on Saturday, May 8 by traveling from their home in Temple City, CA into Pasadena and LA. As an aside, Paul and Janie told us about the "suicide bridge." Such a Fine Sight to See

Saturday, May 1 for Sunday, April 25, 2021 Sunday morning we got ourselves ready to leave, "watched" church via video, and headed out from the Wigwam Motel. It was chilly for the area, but a gorgeous day, so I took some pictures of the old cars scattered around the parking lot in front of the wigwams. I never pass up a shot of a Studebaker ... We wanted to get breakfast at another of those well-known Route 66 places, but it closed for COVID, then "Joe" passed away during that time, and they were not able to reopen. That sad story is repeated many times along the Route. One place that does still exist, though it wasn't open on Sunday morning, was the Rainbow Rock Shop. Lots of dinosaur statues, as well as petrified wood and many decorative rocks and others. We left Holbrook, AZ and headed to Joseph City, AZ.
